Lluis Serra Majem

Rector of the University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria (Spain)

Lluis Serra Majem was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1959.

He has a PhD in Medicine by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1987) and a Professorship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine of the Hospital Clinic of the University of Barcelona (1988). Since 1995 he is Associated Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in the University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, and between 2013-2021 he was appointed as Director of the University Biomedical and Health Research Institute.

Between 1996-2012 he chaired the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, where he fostered and leaded the acknowledgement of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. He has written approximately 800 indexed scientific papers and 60 books, he appears among the 100 most quoted scientists in Spain and among the 1000 at a world level.
